Some of the most successful businesses of the last 20 years didn’t look impressive at the beginning—and that’s exactly why most people missed them.

• Massive funding. As a matter of fact, they started small, very small. 

• Overnight success. They took time to ramp up and are now mighty. 

They were built on membership and subscription models, patiently executed over time. 

Throughout 2025, especially on our Friday episodes, we talked about who actually won during the last two decades—and why. 

Today’s episode brings those stories together and connects them to one unavoidable truth:

Marc Benioff didn’t sell software.

And it permanently changed how business software is sold. 

 

WHEN MEMBERSHIP BECAME PERSONAL 

As we moved into the 2010s, something shifted.

Peloton didn’t sell bikes.
They sold:
