Reinventing Your Future Through Leadership Even if You Don’t Think of Yourself as a Leader
Are you a leader? Don’t answer too fast because no matter what – you are!
What’s up my friends—welcome back to Life By Design 360 Life Mastery Monday.
I’m your host, Doug Reed, and this is the show where we dig deep into how to live intentionally, break through the noise, and create a life that’s meaningful, fulfilling, and uniquely yours.
Now, if you’re listening to this today, I want to speak directly to a very specific group of people. Wherever you are, if you feel like you’re at a crossroads—this episode is for you.
Because today, we’re talking about something that will absolutely change your trajectory if you lean into it.
We’re talking about Leadership. Not just boardroom leadership. Not executive leadership.
We’re talking about leading yourself—by example, with purpose, and through the toughest transitions life throws at you.
Let’s get into it.
The Moment Everything Changed
So, let’s be real for a second.
Losing a job—especially when it’s unexpected—feels like the rug has been ripped out from under you.
Not just financially. Emotionally. Psychologically. Identity-wise.
One minute, you’re part of the machine. You have a calendar full of meetings. People depend on you. Your email is buzzing. You know where you belong.
And then—suddenly—you don’t.
I remember it like it was yesterday.
I walked out of that glass-walled conference room—box in hand—thinking, “What just happened?” I had given years to that company. Led teams. Hit targets. Did everything they asked—and then some.
And still… there I was.
Unemployed.
It was disorienting. It was painful. And if I’m being honest—it was embarrassing.
I remember wondering what I would say if I ran into someone I knew in the parking lot. I remember driving home in silence. I remember sitting there thinking, “Was it me? Did I miss something? Am I still valuable?”
That’s what layoffs do. They don’t just take a paycheck—they shake your sense of worth.
But here’s what I didn’t know at the time:
That moment was the greatest invitation of my life.
Because when you lose what you thought was your identity—you finally get the space to rediscover who you really are.
That job didn’t define me. And yours doesn’t define you. Your title is not your value. Your employer is not your identity. And your past success—or failure—does not dictate your future.
It took me time to see it.
At first, it felt like a breakdown. But eventually, I realized it was a breakthrough in disguise.
The catch? To access that breakthrough, I had to lead myself through it.
And that’s why we’re here today.
So if you’re there right now — sitting in uncertainty… Questioning your worth… Wondering if you still “have it” …
Let me be the voice that cuts through the noise and tells you the truth:
- You still have power.
- You still have purpose.
- And you are absolutely not done.
Redefining Leadership
Let’s redefine leadership for a moment.
Most people think leadership means managing others. Holding meetings. Giving speeches. Wearing suits. Having authority.
But that’s not leadership—that’s position.
True leadership is influence.
And the person you need to influence the most—especially in transition—is yourself.
Because when the structure disappears… When the title is gone… When no one is watching… That’s when real leadership is revealed.
When you lead yourself well, you:
- Set the tone for your mindset
- Stay accountable to your goals
- Build resilience when no one’s applauding
- Inspire others simply by how you show up
That’s the magic of personal leadership—it multiplies.
When you rise, others rise with you. Your kids feel it. Your spouse feels it. Your network feels it. Even when you don’t say a word.
So what does self-leadership actually look like?
- It’s waking up early to learn a new skill—even when fear is loud.
- It’s rewriting your résumé at midnight because you refuse to quit on your future.
- It’s having tough conversations with yourself instead of numbing out.
- It’s showing your kids what courage looks like—not just talking about it.
Leadership isn’t something you turn on at work. It’s who you are—everywhere.
And here’s the shift most people never make:
Leadership is personal before it’s professional.
Once that clicks—everything changes. That’s when transformation begins.
Motivation, Momentum, and Discipline
Now let’s talk about the fuel that drives this engine: motivation.
Let’s be honest — motivation is slippery.
Some days you’re fired up. You’re optimistic. You feel unstoppable.
And other days? It’s a win just to get out of bed and answer one email.
So how do you keep going?
Here’s the truth most people don’t want to hear:
Motivation doesn’t come first—action does.
We’ve been sold this lie that we need to feel inspired before we move. But it’s backwards. You move first. And inspiration follows. Momentum creates motivation—not the other way around. And on the hardest days? That’s when leadership steps in.
Here are three habits that helped me move from stuck… to forward.
- Win Your Mornings
Not everyone’s a morning person—but everyone benefits from starting with intention.
- No phone.
- No news.
- No emails.
Just you, a quiet moment, maybe a strong cup of coffee—and a plan.
Even 15 minutes of intentional focus can change your entire energy for the day.
- Revisit Your “Why”
- Write it down.
- Read it daily.
- Why does this matter?
- Who are you doing this for?
- What kind of life are you building?
Your “why” is your anchor when emotions get rough.
- Keep Micro-Promises to Yourself
Start small.
- “I’ll send one email.”
- “I’ll work on my future for 15 minutes.”
- “I’ll make one connection today.”
When you keep promises to yourself, your confidence rebuilds—brick by brick.
Remember this:
Motivation isn’t magic. It’s built through momentum.
Reinvention with Intention
Alright—let’s talk about reinvention.
When people hear that word, it feels overwhelming.
“I don’t even know where to start.”
“What if I choose wrong?”
“What if I fail again?”
Here’s the answer:
You start exactly where you are.
Reinvention starts with leadership. And leadership starts with ownership.
This is a framework I teach my coaching clients—the 4 L’s of Personal Reinvention.
Look Inward
Before you decide what’s next—get honest about what’s true.
- What lights you up?
- What drains you?
- What work makes time disappear?
Clarity always starts inside.
Learn Ruthlessly
This is your season to become a student again.
- Books.
- Podcasts.
- Courses.
- Mentors.
You don’t need another degree. You need direction.
Lead Out Loud
Share what you’re learning.
- Start writing.
- Host conversations.
You don’t need to be an expert—you just need to be one step ahead. When you lead out loud, opportunities find you.
Launch Intentionally
Whether it’s a new career, business, or pivot—do it on purpose.
Not from fear. Not from desperation. But from clarity and courage.
Because here’s the truth:
Reinvention is hard. But regret is harder. Choose courage.
The Season That Shapes You
You may not see it yet—but this could be one of the most important seasons of your life.
Not because it’s easy. But because it’s shaping you. Your character is being built. Your courage is being tested. Your leadership is being born.
Every person you admire has been here.
The layoff. The loss. The pivot.
What separated them?
They didn’t stop. They didn’t wait. They led themselves forward.
The setback you’re in right now is the soil for your future significance.
But soil only works if you tend it. You have to water it. Own it. And lead through it.
The Life You Design
Here’s what I want you to take with you today:
You don’t need permission to start over. You don’t need a title to lead. And you don’t need all the answers to begin. You just need to take the next step. Then the next one.
Because your life isn’t a project to manage. It’s a design to create. And you are the architect.
