Rebuilding from the Inside Out, The Crazy Power of Personal Hygiene in Reinventing Your Life

Today we’re talking about an incredibly overlooked and usually not spoken of motivational factor in everybody’s life – Personal Hygiene

Yes, cleanliness and grooming—and how something so fundamental is truly a cornerstone of personal growth, happiness, and success.

Stick with me—this is more than soap and toothpaste. This is about building your confidence, your routine, and your self-worth from the inside out.

Let’s rock!

I’m personally semi-retired living in the Caribbean in the winter and Colorado in the summer.

When I’m in Colorado, my summer semi-retirement getaway, sometimes I like to sleep in or “take it easy” after getting out of bed in the morning, even on weekdays.

Then, the day gets away from me, and I find it’s already 3:00 – in the afternoon. What happened?

Actually, no matter what, I like to get going and get rolling!

But I’ve been through them…

Layoffs. Career changes. Life’s re-direction

These can be emotionally heavy experiences.

Reinvention takes clarity and it all starts with how you feel.

When you’ve lost your job or stepped away from a toxic work environment, one of the first things to go – can be your routine.

You’re sleeping in.

You’re stressed out.

Maybe you’re not even changing out of your pajamas some days.

I get it—I’ve been there.

But here’s what happens: Neglecting hygiene becomes a subtle form of self-abandonment.

You start thinking, “What’s the point?” and without realizing it, you’re reinforcing the idea that you’re not worth the effort.

But the truth? You are worth it. Especially now.

Maintaining personal hygiene during tough times is like planting a flag and saying,

“No matter what happens out there, I’m still showing up for myself.”

Simple acts—washing your face, brushing your teeth, putting on clean clothes—these things become your daily wins.

And when you’re rebuilding, those wins matter more than ever.

Let’s take it deeper: Personal hygiene is a physical expression of self-respect.

When you take care of yourself—your body, your appearance—you’re reinforcing your value, even if the job title is gone.

Even if your LinkedIn status changed from “Director of Marketing” to “Open to Work.”

Hygiene says: “I am still worthy. I still matter.”

And guess what? The people around you see it too. You walk differently. You talk with more confidence.

You make eye contact.

You radiate energy that says, “I’m in control.”

Let me ask you—would you trust someone to lead a business or manage a team who looked like they hadn’t showered in days or didn’t care about their appearance?

Of course not.

Your reinvention starts not with your resume—but with your reflection.

Before you ask the world to take you seriously, you’ve got to show yourself that you’re serious.

Now let’s look at the science for a second.

There’s a proven connection between mental health and hygiene. People who are struggling emotionally often stop caring for their hygiene.

But studies show that even small hygiene rituals—like washing your face or brushing your teeth—can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Why? Because these rituals create a sense of control and order. They stimulate the brain’s reward system, giving you a tiny dopamine hit.

And they build momentum—something that’s hard to come by when you’re feeling lost.

And there’s more: Physical cleanliness contributes to better sleep, stronger immunity, and lower stress hormones.

So in a very real way, hygiene is healing.

When you’re rebuilding your life after a layoff or career shift, this is your power tool.

Let’s pivot to how this all impacts your reinvention journey.

You’re applying for jobs. Pitching your new business. Meeting people. Interviewing. Networking.

And whether it’s fair or not—people form impressions in seconds.

You don’t need to be a supermodel. But you do need to be clean, polished, and presentable.

Why?

Because grooming signals discipline. It signals awareness. It shows that you care about details—and if you care about yourself, chances are you’ll care about the work too.

This goes for virtual meetings too. That camera picks up everything. A clean shirt, brushed hair, good lighting—it all matters.

And more importantly—you feel different when you’re groomed.

Think about it—how do you feel when you’ve just shaved or gotten a haircut? When your breath is fresh and your clothes are clean?

You’re more likely to speak up, share your ideas, and take action. You’re more likely to believe in yourself.

That’s not just hygiene—that’s personal empowerment.

Let’s talk tactics. How do you rebuild your hygiene routine when you’ve been in a slump?

Here’s a simple weekly structure—what I call the 5-Day Hygiene Reset:

  • Day 1: Reset Clean – Long shower, fresh clothes, cut nails.
  • Day 2: Oral Care Focus – Brush and floss morning and night, rinse with mouthwash.
  • Day 3: Hair Day – Wash your hair, trim it or schedule a cut.
  • Day 4: Grooming Touch-Up – Shave, moisturize, apply deodorant and fragrance.
  • Day 5: Style Upgrade – Choose and prep 3 solid outfits you feel good in.

These aren’t just hygiene tasks—they’re mental cues. You’re telling your brain,

“We’re getting ready for something big. A new season. A new chapter.”

Make these actions part of your morning ritual. Light a candle. Play music. Make it feel good, not like a chore.

Your hygiene habits become your daily declaration: “I am moving forward.”

I want you to think about hygiene not as a task, but as a form of self-leadership.

Think of great leaders, athletes, entrepreneurs—they all have personal routines. They don’t just roll out of bed and stumble into the day. They show up with intention.

You are the CEO of your life now. And CEOs prepare. They present themselves well. They build trust—starting with themselves.

So tomorrow morning, when you’re brushing your teeth or putting on clean clothes—remember:

You are not just cleaning your body. You are clearing space for growth, opportunity, and confidence.

Let’s wrap it up with a reminder.

If your life has been shaken up by a layoff, burnout, or career transition—don’t overlook the power of the basics.

Hygiene might seem small. But it’s foundational. It’s your daily commitment to yourself.
It’s where reinvention truly begins.

So start there. Clean up. Show up. Reclaim your power—one grooming ritual at a time.
