Planning for the New Year – The Power of Clear Business Goals

Hello and welcome back to Life by Design 360’s Thoroughly Business Thursday edition, the podcast where we turn life’s unexpected challenges into opportunities for growth and success.

I’m your host Doug Reed, and today we’re diving into a timely and powerful topic, planning for the new year by establishing clear business goals. Whether you’ve recently gone through layoff, are in the early stages of launching your own venture, or already running a business and want to level up, the end of the year is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and reset.

Why? Because a new year offers a clean slate. It gives you a chance to set clear, actionable goals that will guide your decisions, fuel your motivation, and turn your vision into a reality. So grab your notebook and maybe a cup of coffee, because we’re about to map out a framework to launch you into the new year with clarity and momentum, and make it your best year ever.

Think about it. When the calendar flips, it’s more than just a day change. It’s a mindset shift.

People naturally reflect on the past and imagine what’s possible for the future. But without a plan, the new year can quickly look just like the old one, and that’s where clear goals come in. They act as your compass.

You always know what direction you’re moving in. They provide structure, breaking a big dream into measurable steps. And they build momentum, because each milestone that you hit fuels confidence for your next.

If you’ve experienced a layoff, setting goals for the new year gives you stability and a sense of control in uncertain times. Instead of being stuck in reaction mode, you step into creation mode. And the key takeaway here is this.

Clear goals for the new year aren’t just about business growth. They are about regaining focus, resilience, and confidence. So when planning for the new year, break your goals into three specific categories.

One, short term, the next 90 days. These are your kickoff goals. Example, register your business, set up your website, or open a business bank account or sign up your very first client, or your next one.

These give you quick wins and momentum. Midterm, six to 18 months. These goals shape sustainability.

Examples are developing consistent revenue streams, refine your customer base, launch new offers, or hire your first or a new employee to help you scale. These are all about building your foundation and strengthening the current foundation. And then your long-term goals.

These are three to five years. These goals tie directly to your vision. Do you want to scale into new markets? Create multiple income streams? Or even prepare your business for an eventual sale? These big picture goals keep you inspired when short term tasks feel a bit overwhelming.

And here’s a pro tip for you. Use the SMART framework. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

For example, instead of saying grow my business, reframe it as increase annual revenues by 25% by adding a subscription product and expanding into my social media marketing. Next, align your goals with your vision and values. Here’s the truth.

Not every goal is a good idea. The best ones align with your vision and your values. The new year is a great time to ask yourself, what matters most to me now? And do I have flexibility? Do I value flexibility? Do I value family time, financial security, impact? What’s truly the most important to me? Your goals should reflect those answers.

For example, if your top value is freedom, setting a goal that locks you in an 80-hour work week is not aligned. Exercise Here’s an important exercise for you. Write a one-page vision statement for the new year.

Where do you want to be in the next 12 months from now, personally and professionally? Who do you want to serve? What impact do you want to make? Then filter every business goal through that lens. Here’s a real-life example for you. If your vision is an eco-friendly brand, a goal like, switch 100% of the materials to sustainable sources in one year, not only aligns with your vision, but also strengthens your brand identity.

Now let’s talk about overcoming common new goal challenges. Even with a strong plan, challenges will come. Let’s take a look at a few and how to overcome them.

Overwhelm A new year often comes with a long to-do list. Break these goals into bite-sized tasks. Instead of launch the business, set mini goals like write a business plan, register the LLC, design the logo.

And then there’s always the fear of failure. Many people don’t set ambitious goals because they’re afraid of missing them. Remember, goals are guideposts, they’re not shackles.

You can adjust them at any time as you grow. And then there’s losing momentum. January enthusiasm, it fades into February and then into March.

Okay here’s the thing, stay on track, build in accountability, share your goals with a mentor, mastermind group, or supportive peer. Here’s another pro tip for you, revisit your why regularly. Every time motivation dips, reconnect to the deeper reason you started the journey.

Now let’s talk a little bit about tools and strategies for the new year’s success. To make your planning effective, leverage the right tools. Goal tracking apps, Nello, Notion, Trello, Notion, or Asanya for organizing tasks.

90 day plans, break your year into 90 day sprints. Each focus, each quarter has focus priorities. Vision boards, I love vision boards.

Visualize your goals, write them down, seeing them daily makes them more real. And just a side segment here, I’ve used vision boards for years now, for decades, and you know what, they’ve helped me to realize most of my goals in my life. And the ones that weren’t worth achieving, they got scratched off the list.

They’re okay to do that. Something else about vision boards I want you to know, it’s a secret of mine. I’ve used vision boards for years, actually decades, and they’ve helped me to realize some of my most important goals and dreams.

You should always use them and be specific in regard to what it is you want. But also remember, again, it doesn’t tie you to that. You don’t have to do that.

You can always change that as well. And then journaling, weekly reflections help you to adapt and stay aligned. Key insight, here’s a key insight for you.

Consistency is more powerful than perfection. Small steps repeated consistently will transform your year. Okay, so let’s just get a fresh start mindset going.

Planning for the new year isn’t just about setting goals. It’s about adopting a fresh start and a new mindset. Last year’s setbacks, see last year’s setbacks not as failures, but as lessons, and treat the new year as a reset button.

Understand that momentum builds as soon as you start acting. If you’ve gone through a layoff, this is especially important. Your goals give you back agency and turn the page from uncertainty to possibility.

Here’s another key takeaway for you. The new year’s an invitation to design life on your terms. So as you head into the new year, remember this.

Clear goals are your compass. Align them with your vision and your values. Break them down into short, mid, and long-term steps, and use tools and accountability to stay on track.
