Here’s What You Need to Know to Maximize Your Severance Pay

Welcome to LifebyDesign360, where we explore every secret tip, trick and technique to maximize your opportunities to navigate life’s unforeseen career transitions and come out stronger. I’m Doug Reed, and today we’re diving into a topic that’s critical for anyone facing a career shift – the importance of reviewing and maximizing your severance and benefits after being laid off.

I’m going to show you want you need to know to get every penny that you have coming to you if you have to go through a lay-off.

Now, layoffs can feel overwhelming, but taking the right steps immediately can have a lasting impact on your future job prospects and overall well-being. In the next 17 minutes, we’ll walk through why this review process matters, what to look out for, and how to position yourself for your next opportunity.

First off, let’s acknowledge something – getting laid off is tough, and if you’ve listened to any of our other podcasts, you know it’s okay to feel a range of emotions. However, while taking time to process is important, you’ll want to quickly shift gears and focus on the practical aspects. This starts with reviewing your severance and benefits package.

Why is this so important? Well, your severance package is often the last financial bridge between your old role and your next job. It’s designed to offer some stability during this transition period. But not all severance packages are created equal.

Let’s break it down.

First, what exactly is severance? It’s essentially compensation provided by your employer after you’re let go. This can come in the form of:

  • A lump sum payment or salary continuation
  • Paid health benefits for a set period
  • Accrued but unused vacation or PTO
  • Outplacement services to help with your job search
    • Now, here’s a special note about outplacement services – they only last for a short period of time. Once the contract that your x employer bought is over, most of these services go away. That’s why LifeByDesign360 and our Academy and Community were born.
    • Also, considering the outplacement company was bought and paid for by your x-employer they’re obligated to provide cover for your x-employer, often contractually, to cover for your x-employer.
    • This may be a shameless plug – but we were created to work for you – not your x-employer! Being a part of our community gives you a huge edge in your job search, creating a business you can’t ever get fired from and building the wealth you need to retire ASAP.

Okay, back to your severance pay. It’s essential to carefully review these details. For example, you may be offered a lump sum, but what does that amount cover? Is it one month of salary, three months, or more? Knowing the breakdown will help you plan your budget accordingly.

Additionally, check if the company is offering to cover your health insurance premiums. Losing health coverage can be a major concern, so this piece of the severance puzzle is crucial.

Here’s something that many people don’t realize – severance packages can often be negotiated. You don’t have to accept the first offer. If your severance feels insufficient or if you’re missing key benefits, politely ask for adjustments.

Consider highlighting:

  • Your tenure and contributions
  • Any unvested bonuses or stock options
  • The financial impact of losing health benefits

A professional yet firm approach can sometimes result in more favorable terms. Remember, the worst they can say is no.

Beyond the immediate severance, consider your long-term benefits. This includes retirement accounts like 401(k)s, pension plans, and stock options. You’ll want to clarify:

  • When and how you can roll over your 401(k)
  • What happens to your stock options
  • If you have any bonuses pending that you’re entitled to

Failing to address these details could mean leaving money on the table. Don’t be afraid to ask HR for clarification. Again, your HR at the old employer is obligated to them, not necessarily to you.

At this point, you might be wondering – do I need a lawyer or career coach to help with this process? In some cases, yes. Employment attorneys can review your severance agreement to ensure it’s fair, while career coaches can guide you toward new opportunities faster.

If you’re unsure, reach out for a consultation. Many professionals offer free initial meetings to help you determine whether their services are needed.

Finally, let’s talk about the bigger picture. Reviewing your severance and benefits isn’t just about the here and now – it’s about preparing for your next role. Taking care of your financial health allows you to focus on finding a job that aligns with your skills and passions rather than rushing into the first offer that comes along.

Use this time to:

  • Update your resume and LinkedIn profile
  • Network with former colleagues
  • Take online courses to sharpen your skills

Remember, this transition can be an opportunity for growth. Approach it with confidence and strategy.
