Goal setting – Setting clear, achievable goals and working towards them.
Hey there, and welcome to LifeByDesign 360, the place where we dive deep into personal growth, resilience, and transformation. I’m Doug Reed, and today, we’re talking about something that can make or break your journey during life’s most challenging transitions. We’re diving into the power of goal setting – and why it’s absolutely crucial when starting the new year and especially if you’ve gone through a lay-off and are working to reinvent your life.
Let’s be honest. Losing a job can feel overwhelming. It’s like standing at a crossroads without a map. But here’s the thing – while the situation may seem uncertain, setting clear, achievable goals gives you direction and purpose.
Even if you’re employed but you feel like you’ve lost your way, it’s the same thing. It’s the compass that leads you to an amazing and prosperous future.
The new year is a perfect time to set goals. After going through a lay-off is another perfect time to set new goals.
So, let’s break it down.
UNDERSTANDING GOAL SETTING
So, why is goal setting so powerful? Well, goals provide clarity. They give you something to aim for, something to measure your progress against. Without goals, it’s easy to drift.
But with them, you create a path forward – one step at a time.
Goals transform your focus. Instead of dwelling on the difficult situation at hand, you channel that energy into creating your next opportunity. And the best part? When you break big goals into smaller, actionable steps, even the most daunting transitions feel manageable.
The amazing Jim Rone mentor to Tony Robbins, had his own mentor: A gentleman by the name of Earl Schoaff. Earl asked Jim when they first got together, “let me see a list of your current goals I’ve had a lot of experience and I’ve been out here for a while so let’s go over them and maybe I can really give you some good ideas”. Jim said, I don’t have a list, I don’t have any goals. With that Earl told Jim, “well, if you don’t have a list of your goals i can guess your bank balance within a few $100. And he did and it was low.
Jim Rohn asked Earl, you mean my bank balance would be a lot bigger if I learned how to set goals. Earl exclaimed, drastically bigger. And it’s the same for you.
Use your imagination. Think of goal setting as designing the blueprint for your future. Each goal is a building block that shapes the next chapter of your life.
GOAL SETTING DURING JOB LOSS
When you’re employed either happily or unhappily you may not have hit that rock that makes you take the time to set up your goals. This shouldn’t be overlooked but a lot of times it is.
However, when you’re laid off, emotions run high. You may be scared. You may have a difficult time focusing. But this is the perfect time to re-evaluate and reset. Start by asking yourself: What do I really want? Where do I see myself in six months, a year, or five years?
Then, write down those goals. Maybe it’s landing a new job in a different industry, learning a new skill, or starting a side hustle. Be specific. The clearer your goals, the easier they are to achieve.
Once you’ve set your goals, create small daily or weekly tasks that inch you closer to them. For example, aim to send out five job applications a week or complete one online course module each day. Small, consistent actions lead to big results over time.
The beauty of goal setting is that it puts you back in the driver’s seat. You’re no longer just reacting to the situation – you’re actively shaping your future.
Another beauty of setting goals is that you will get results. Whether it’s financial results, personal results or social results you’re going to get results.
By setting goals and staying disciplined you can avoid poor results
By managing and staying adhered to your goals you will get good results. Further it will help you to realize your dreams by setting up your vision of the future.
Goals are like a magnet. They pull you into your future. And the stronger they are and the more purposeful they are, the bigger they are the more unique they are, the stronger they pull you to a brilliant future. Excellent goals and high dreams pull you through all kinds of down days and down seasons.
Some people get swallowed by the disaster of life because they have nothing on the other side of the disaster to pull them through. A bad day can almost overwhelm you if you don’t have something really purposeful to go for on the other side. That is one of the purposes of big goals and big dreams, to get you through the bad days and life’s more difficult valleys.
If you have a spectacular vision of where you’re going and what you’re going to accomplish with your goals and your dreams getting through the tougher days will be much easier.
RE-INVENTING YOUR LIFE
Now let’s talk about reinvention. Being laid off can be an opportunity to pivot and explore new directions. But reinvention requires intention. It starts with setting goals that align with your passions and skills.
Maybe you’ve always wanted to start a freelance business or pursue a career in tech. Set milestones to guide your journey – take a course, build a portfolio, or network with people in the industry. Goal setting makes reinvention not just a dream, but a structured plan of action.
Powerful goals have 3 components.
First, they must be inspiring to you.
Next, they must be believable. You must believe that you can achieve your goal.
And last, they must be achievable. And believe me almost anything is achievable.
Consider this undeniable fact. If you told somebody 50 years ago that you would be able to watch videos on your telephone, they would say you are crazy.
If you told somebody 100 years ago that you would look into a box and be able to watch the shows and movies that we enjoy today on demand, they would say you are crazy. Further, if you told them that we would have gone to the moon and back several times with people getting on the moon and walking around and coming back to earth, they would tell you you’re crazy.
The life that we Live Today was manufactured by other people’s goals and dreams.
What are your dreams? That’s what we help you achieve at LifeByDesign360 Academy & Community. That’s where you get on the fast track to an amazing life.
Let me share a quick story.
When I got out of college, I went into mortgage banking. And for the first five years I was very successful at it. Then interest rates went up. And the bottom got pulled out from under me. At one point I really wasn’t sure who was going to eat. Me, my big dog, or if i was just going to eat my dog.
Okay, just kidding, I love dogs, but it was bad.
I took some assessments and found several occupations that fit me better. One was insurance sales; one was financial planning. I know both offered the possibility of income continuity – which by the way – is very important subject and one I cover inside the Academy and community.
Immediately, I put together my goals for getting involved.
I hit a lot of roadblocks. The first was a major company telling me I’d never make it in the business (what they should have said was working for them). Another was when one company told me about the requirements… I could be at a family bar b que on Sunday, I’d get a call and by 7:00 that night, I’d have to be on a plane for Greenwich CT to do a deal. That didn’t sound like fun to me.
I found a way to get in the business and have never looked back, creating a very successful career where I help people I genuinely like, enjoy and love helping. It’s not even like a job and you know what they say about loving your job, occupation, or business – it’s like never working a day in your life. More on that later.
It all started with goal setting.
PRACTICAL TIPS TO EFFECTIVE GOAL SETTING
Let’s get practical. How do you set goals that actually stick? Here are a few tips to set SMART GOALS:
- Be Specific – Vague goals don’t work. Instead of saying “I want a new job,” say “I want to apply to 20 marketing positions in the next month.”
- Set Measurable Milestones – Track your progress. Celebrate small wins along the way.
- Make your goals Attainable: be honest with yourself about what you can reasonably accomplish at this point in your life while taking into consideration your current responsibilities.
- Make Them Realistic – Aim high but keep your goals achievable. If you’re learning a new skill, don’t expect to master it overnight. Your goal needs to be doable, real and practical.
- Time-bound Your Goals – Set deadlines. This creates urgency and keeps you focused.
- Stay Flexible – Life happens. If a goal needs adjusting, that’s okay. The important thing is to keep moving forward.
THE LONG-TERM PAYOFF
Goal setting doesn’t just get you through a layoff – it lays the foundation for lifelong success. When you consistently set and achieve goals, you build confidence, resilience, and a sense of control over your life.
And remember, goal setting isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. One goal at a time, one day at a time.
Be sure to evaluate and reflect on your goals. The basis for knowing where we want to go is knowing where we came from and where we are. You need to understand how to look at what you have done and then use that as a platform for what you want to do next.
Here is the basic process for evaluation and reflection:
find a quiet place. Reflection is best done away from distraction. It gives your mind space to think.
Take regular time. Whether it’s once a week. Every other week, once a month or once a quarter be sure to set aside regular time to evaluate and reflect.
Look back: look at what you have accomplished and where you are. Be specific period be truthful. Be ruthlessly honest with your progress.
Write it down: keep a record of your progress. This gives you the chance at the next stage of evaluation to see exactly where you are.
Look forward: set your next goal. Stretch yourself according to what works for you. Once you’ve reached a goal you’re not over. Just like the beginning of a new year or going through a job or business transition, set up new goals and new dreams.
To truly master goal setting for yourself under any condition be sure to be accountable to yourself. Internal accountability is essentially the level of integrity you maintain you maintain not only throughout your own evaluation process but also in your life it means that when you look at yourself you judge yourself with honesty. This is where you hold yourself accountable to doing what you said you would do.
The next and highest level of accountability is external. Find someone else or a group of others to hold you accountable. When you commit to giving an account to someone else for your actions and goals you take it to the next level.
Here are a few things to keep in mind as you set up an accountability partner:
choose someone who cares about you but can also be tough and honest with you.
Tell them specifically what your goals are.
commit to being honest with them and they need to be honest with you. Give them permission to speak words of encouragement as well as words of challenge when the situation calls for it.
Agree on a reasonable time frame in which you will allow them to evaluate your progress and hold you accountable.
Follow up on their words when they challenge you or call you to action.
As you move forward, I want you to ask yourself – what goal can I set today that will lead to a better tomorrow?
